The DSO "Defense Science Office" is a defensive technology research facility and group, subordinate to the office of the Department of Defense (国防総省系の) of the UFS.
They work mostly as an Anti-Nomad group, or those criminally involved with demonic technology.
We are supposed to be a UFS organization, right?~ We should have a few more war councils, or have the President turn up, or something...
Policy[]
Are opposed to demonic influence, but also willing to cross some lines that the Taimanin are upholding. The DSO is very willing to disrupt and attack evil groups without the laws of Japan stopping them. Take a stronger stand against demons and are less likely to cooperate. Are in a constant fight against "G" and Nomad. More morally gray, they also come in conflict with the Taimanin at times, but just as much worked with them.
The DSO serves under the Department of Defense (DOD)
History[]
Background[]
Made out of formidable personnel (researchers, soldiers, Rogue Taimanin) which are specialized to counter demonic influences in human society. Since their foundation, they are the strongest anti-demonic group in the UFS and have bases around the world. Their base in Japan is hidden in the Orange Industry Building. They belong to the Department of Defense of the UFS, and often are the less aggressive arm of the UFS compared to the State Department.
At some point, they recruited the "Masked Taimanin" and made her one of the leaders of the Japanese branch. Later on, the group also recruited Koukawa Asuka and gave her a Prosthesis after a lost battle. Under the DSO, Asuka became known as the Steel Reaper and her strength was compared to that of Asagi of the Taimanin. The DSO also has a large focus on research into Taima Particles and weapon creation, with Kotani Kenji hoping to find a way to deal with powerful demons.
Unlike the Taimanin, which often are unable to fight public groups which are not officially marked as targets or can cover their tracks like Nomad, the DSO has attacked Nomad bases and Chinese Union bases which used demonic tech in a stealth mission multiple times.
Visual Novels[]
In Taimanin Asagi 3, the group send Asuka to destroy the Ghoul project on the Taihei Island Base. Afterward they send Asuka to attack the Prime Minister's Official Residence, so that Kenji could collect data, the DSO suspecting that Japan's prime minster Asai worked with Nomad and had a big plan to bring down the country. Even with the data, the DSO was too late to stop Asai's plan and Nonomura Hiroo was killed and Asagi and her Gosha Taimanin were made into scapegoats, while in the public the Chinese Union was blamed so Asai could push Japan to enter the UFS for defense. The UFS itself split between the Department of Defense and State Department on this issue. However, before the DSO could act, the Masked Taimanin was killed saving Asuka and their base in the Orange Industry Building was taken over by Oboro and a number of recruited thugs.
Now hostages, Asuka was forced to endure torture, with Oboro planning to break her will and use her against Asagi. In the end, thanks to Kenji, Asuka is able to take control of the situation frees her co-workers and with the help of Asagi kills Edwin Black in her route. The DSO afterward is still active and Asuka remains with the group but is on better terms with Asagi.
Timeline TABA[]
TA3 did not take place. The DSO often works with the Fuuma Organization, both opposing Task Force G of the State Department and the Fuuma Danjo Loyalists within. As a result, both the Masked Taimanin and Asuka often work with Fuuma Kotaro even if they also at times fight against each other. Regardless of all groups, the DSO, has the best relations with the Fuuma Organization. Requesting him, for example, in the retrieval of Saya NEO. Other members are introduced to the group overtime.
Kotaro is also able to capture some of their members but does so less with force, but does switch them to his rank like Mishea Silkies, which becomes one of his Fuuma 7. Kotaro continues to bully Koukawa Asuka and often gets her into a lewd context, which creates a love-hate relationship, with Kotaro often going to be far or is attempting to double-cross the Masked Taimanin. Keeping more money, or a Philosopher's Stone for himself, which always leads to trouble and conflict, regardless both sides often support each other very regular. As Kotaro would have died on multiple points without their help. Thanks to the DSO, Kotaro was able to save his sister, as she was captured by Danjo.
After Kotaro defeated Fuuma Danjo of G, and awoken to an ability to absorb somebody "fully", including all their abilities and memories. The DSO and Taimanin decide that he is too dangerous and keep him save at a nearby beach as they consider their options. G begins to attack and during that time Kotaro is able to escape. As Kotaro is able to get Amamiya Shisui on his side and confronts both Asagi and the Masked Taimanin, he tells them to leave Black to him and trust in his abilities, afterward they can be enemies again, and returns some of the captured women he still had. The DSO agrees, and continues to support him.
In what if content, which appears to be slightly canon, the Taimanin and DSO had worked together, giving some of them additional equipment. This would be later referenced in the case of some members, which worked close with the DSO and were chosen for later missions with Kotaro because of that. The DSO is also well-informed about Brain Flayer, Otherworld Gates, Edwin Black and Philosopher's Stones and makes a strong effort to deal with all of these things dangerous elements which endanger dimensional stability. The DSO learned, near the end of the TABA's run, that G had their leadership replaced in secret by Nomad, and asked Kotaro to investigate further, which lead to the final battle. During the final encounter, between Nomad and Fuuma Organization, they assist but are unable to come close to the main fighting area busy with their own battles before the TABA Reset occurs.
Timeline RPGX[]
TA3 did not take place. Unlike in other continuities, the DSO is not very hostile towards Nomad, in RPGX, as Edwin Black (RPGX) not only lost his ability to cause another reset, his goals and motivations have become more acceptable as well.
The DSO at times works with the Taimanin, though it still is rare at first. Club Persona is introduced as a front of the DSO to act in Tokyo Kingdom. As the Fuuma Organization does not exist, they work still often with the Independent Commando Unit with Asuka and Kotaro again sharing some missions. One of the early missions, requests the destruction of Saya NEO, but Kotaro refuses the DSO request, and brings Saya close enough to Gosha to be under their protection. Though, this would create tension between the Masked Taimanin, and Asagi, further cooperation would ease the distrust again. The DSO often gives missions, which go against G's interest or investigates on their own in cases or fight forces of the Wraith Faction. Multiple of the characters from TABA, are now confirmed or switch to the DSO, such as Alberta which in TABA was a member of the Fuuma 7 but now is a member of the DSO.
One of their storage facilities contained a Brain Flayer artifact, the Tesserac. A Yukikaze from an alternative dark Future, arrived in the RPGX world and warned Kotaro, about the danger, knowing that this could also mean doom for this reality if left as is. While the Masked Taimanin and Koukawa Asuka at first attack Yukikaze and Kotaro, as the Brain Flayer Arsal arrives to steal the artifact, the DSO and Taimanin work together. As Asuka holds the small object, she is again told to trust Future Yukikaze, and destroys the artifact just in case.
A joined operation of Taimanin, Nomad and DSO was able to destroy the Anzu, which threatened to destroy Japan with a giant storm.
Timeline Action[]
TA3 did not take place.
The DSO at times works with the Taimanin, more so than RPGX. Helped the Taimanin locating Momochi Toyo and a Task Force G base. Both Igawa Sakuya and Kannazuki Sora trained in one of the DSO bases before returning to Gosha.
